Xiaomei Zhao was born and grew up in China and is currently living in Beijing. She has had a strong passion for art since she was a young girl and has been constantly drawing since then. Most of her art technique is self-taught except her training in oil painting which was learned at the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts. She has been developing her skill with oil painting for almost 10 years.

It is a blend of talent, learned ability and consistent hard work which shows through in her art. She also shares her experience with new artists in a part-time teaching role, but it is oil painting that is her focus. She has worked on many large projects with other top artists in Beijing, such as a 100 meter long wall painting commissioned for the Chinese Army Festival 2007. Now she has the opportunity to show her works to Canadians at the Buckhorn Fine Art Festival and to share her beautiful works with people who appreciate art.

I am a pastel artist who has been working in the medium for the last 5 years. I am captivated by the vibrancy of colour, the immediacy of expression and the sense of depth that layering of pastels allow me to achieve. My main focus is landscape painting which is inspired by the rural countryside north of Toronto, Ontario where I spend a great deal of time. I work both en plein air and in my studio. I am excited by the seasonal colour variations, the textural varieties of fields, trees and rock, old barn boards, the reflections on lakes and rivers and the changing moods of the sky.
Landscapes from travels abroad, still life and animals are also favourite subjects. I consider my style impressionistic. The effects of light on objects and the resulting abstract patterns and textures are my focus. Strength of colour, vibrating complementaries and strong value contrasts are all ingredients in my painting process.

My background includes degrees in Fine Art and Interior Design. I have worked as an Art Director in Advertising and currently am self-employed as a Residential Interior Designer in Toronto and in cottage country north of the city. Since graduating from university, I have painted in a variety of media including graphite, acrylics, oils and watercolours in addition to pastel.

For continuing inspiration and education, I have participated in classes and workshops given by John Anderson, Jack Pardue, Dave Beckett, Anne Kelly Walsh and Tim Daniels to name a few. I am an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists and remain an active member of Pastel Artists Canada.

Brent Townsend is a highly respected Wildlife artist who lets his paintings speak for him. His passion for the outdoors, combined with his talent, allows him to create works of art that aren’t just portraits of wildlife, but scenes that relay the intimate connection the animals have with their habitat.

Born in 1962 in a suburban Toronto neighborhood, his backyard was bordered by a ravine. Fascinated with the wealth of nature that existed just outside his back door, Townsend studied the rocks, water and plant life along the creek. As he grew older, his area of interest widened and he now specializes in supremely detailed views of the North American wilderness.

Townsend is one of Canada’s favorite and foremost wildlife artists. In fact, he was both the first Canadian and the youngest person ever to win the “Artist of the Year” Award from the collectors Society at the 1989 Western and Wildlife Art Exhibition in Minneapolis Minnesota. His incredibly detailed, yet clear and precise art has gained admiration around the world. He was named the featured artist at the Vancouver International Wildlife Art Show and a participant of the World Wildlife Fund’s “Spirit of the Wild” art auction and the Endangered Species Art Show at the Kortright Conservation Centre. He was also featured with just four other distinguished Canadian artists, in a Canadian exhibition at the Suntory Museum in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan. In 1996, it was Townsend’s design that was chosen to grace Canada’s new two-dollar coin.

Townsend now has his own gallery in Warkworth, Ontario and lives in Campbellford, Ontario with his family.

John Sabourin was born and spent most of his adult life in Fort Simpson, NWT. John become interested in painting in 1989 and carving in 1995, but it was not until his graduation from the Victoria College of Art, Victoria, British Columbia in 1999 that he decided to devote himself full time to art. John’s carvings explore the complex relationship between humans and nature, embracing his Dene cultural roots by bringing stone to life in stories and legends.

John has sold carvings and paintings to private collectors in Canada and the United States and has completed several pieces for commissions, including a large granite sculpture for the French Federation in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories in 2005. In 1999, along with two other artists, John completed a five foot marble sculpture that celebrated the cultural diversity of Canada’s north.

In February 2007, John was honoured to represent the NWT in “Burning Cold”, a juried art exhibition of ten Canadian artists, at the Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon. John participated in group exhibitions in Australia (2002), Arizona (1998), and New Mexico (1995) and had his first solo exhibition of his carvings at Nor-Art Gallery in Yellowknife, NWT in February, 2006. Since moving to Kingston, Ontario in 2007, John has had more opportunities for public exhibitions of his work.

John feels privilegd to be able to work at something he cares about so deeply and enjoys sharing his art and knowledge with others. He has taught carving workshops to students at schools in Yellowknife NWT since 2003 and to adults at various art festivals and has brought that tradition with him to Ontario. John has been interviewed by local and national news media including CKWS Kingston, APTN and Global TV and he has been featured on CBC Artspots.

John is represented by Birchwood Gallery, Yellowknife, NWT; Bearclaw Gallery, Edmonton, AB; Sandra Whitton Gallery, Kingston, ON; The Guild Shop Gallery, Toronto, ON; Canadian Guild of Crafts, Montreal QC and Arctic Artistry Gallery, New York, NY.

Art by Mia Lane, an award winning Canadian country artist who paints realism scenes of animals and nature, particularly dogs, cats, wildlife and country landscapes.

Ever since she was a young girl, Mia Lane was convinced that she would become a fine artist. “I was about 13 years old when I sold my first piece of art”, she recalls. “I found my inspiration in my love for the outdoors, for wildlife, and in particular through my special fondness for dogs,” says the soft-spoken painter.

Mia Lane was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1955. As the art training offered at that time was mostly limited towards a modern approach, and Mia preferred a more traditional direction, she chose an illustration course at Sheridan College. This gave her a more diversified background in the arts and also a better chance to use her art to earn a living.

After graduating in 1976, Mia worked as a designer and illustrator, gradually making a transition to fine art, working full time as an artist since 1984.

Today, Mia’s work is both highly regarded and widely collected. Her originals can be found all over the world in private homes and art galleries. In 1988, Canada Post commissioned Mia to create four special “Dogs of Canada” postage stamps to commemorate the Canadian Kennel Club’s centennial. The stamps were so well received that a special print of one of them was issued - a first for Canada Post.

Mia’s work and involvement with conservation led to her being awarded the 1996 Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters ‘Artist of the Year’ Award and the subsequent commission for “Fireside Memories”. Then again in 2000 she was honoured with this award, and her piece “Bred for a Purpose” was produced to help raise funds for conservation.

The colour and life that characterizes Mia’s highly detailed acrylic paintings of animals stem from careful study and years of observation. Before starting each painting, she makes numerous sketches and photographs of the animal, carefully studying the way it moves and the distinctive features and markings that characterize the species or breed, especially concentrating on “expression”. Finally, she thoroughly researches the habitat to ensure that the animal is portrayed in an appropriate setting.

Andrew is one of Canada’s most recognized nature artists for a style that captures both breathless images and a reverence for realism.

Born in Hungary in 1946, Andrew and his family immigrated to Canada in 1957 after escaping the turmoil of the Hungarian uprising against the Russian invasion. After arriving on the East Coast of Canada, their journey eventually led them to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Although Andrew spent his early adulthood employed as a topographical draftsman, his love of art was always with him. He began working with oils and painting his surrounding landscape. A move to the interior of BC gave him more inspiration with the vast mountains, lakes, and wildlife. In the early 1980’s he started to paint wildlife and sell his works through small local shows and galleries. This self taught artist was starting to see his talent evolve through developing his own recognizable style.

With a growing demand for Andrew’s work he began to produce limited edition prints. 110 editions are still on the secondary market and have made him a highly recognized name worldwide.

Exhibits and research have taken Andrew to far parts of the world, such as Hong Kong, Switzerland, England, Austria, New Zealand, Germany and Africa. Extensive travels around North America have allowed Andrew to exhibit in such places as Florida, South Carolina, Las Vegas, Montana, Phoenix, and Seattle, in addition to many Canadian Provinces. The ability to travel because of his art is a privilege Andrew appreciates greatly.
